C-Gel is a topical 2.5% calcium gluconate gel used in the first aid treatment of skin burns caused by exposure to hydrofluoric acid. C-Gel is also known as HF antidote gel. Should be to hand where there is the following industries:

  • Glass manufacturing
  • Chemical manufacturing
  • Pharmaceutical (as well as oil & gas),
  • Agricultural industry
  • Any business or organisation that uses hydrofluoric acid

C-Gel works by reacting with hydrofluoric acid to form Calcium fluoride. This prevents the extraction of calcium from the body’s tissues, avoiding deep tissue damage. C-Gel should not be used on eyes. Eye that have been splashed with hydrofluoric acid should be flushed with water for at least 15 minutes while holding eyelids open. All hydrofluoric acid burns require full medical examination, even when  treated using C-Gel. It is advised to go to hospital immediately.

C-Gel Calcium Gel is used in the treatment of skin burns caused by Hydrofluoric acid to prevent the extraction of calcium from the wound reducing burn damage to the bone deep tissue.

The advice is for responsive patients exposed to hydrofluoric acid, immediate decontamination is critical.

  • Even relatively low strength hydrofluoric acid is toxic and has the potential to cause serious tissue damage and death when contaminated individuals are not treated swiftly
  • C-Gel is a high performance calcium gluconate gel. C-Gel combines with and neutralises the fluoride ion present in HF acid. This helps to prevent pain and tissue damage caused by HF acid whilst a patient is in transit to hospital.
